Read: Romans 12
Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. (v. 11)
As I write this devotional, the leaves are changing color, the hours of daylight are decreasing, and temperatures are dropping. It is the season of fall and winter is just around the corner. A poll by the American Psychiatric Association revealed that about 41 percent of Americans reported their mood worsens in winter, compared to 22 percent who say it improves. As you read these words, it’s August and maybe you’re feeling the opposite effect—slowed down by heat and humidity!
Weather, temperature, and the degree of daylight are not the only things that can weigh us down. We feel alarm over conflict in the world and at home, the depravity reported in the news, and the decline in church participation. Christians have felt the oppression of discouragement, Satanic oppression, and the effects of sin throughout history. It’s easy for us to get discouraged and perhaps even cry out, “Come, Lord Jesus.”
In the midst of these struggles, the apostle Paul urged readers then and now with today’s key verse. In light of the hope we have in Jesus Christ, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and the fact that we know who wins in the end, we can avoid laziness and discouragement. We can live with passion, zeal, and hope. Are you living out verse 11? Our service will make a difference in this world as we seek first the kingdom of God and share the hope we have with others (1 Peter 3:15).
As you pray, ask God to revive your zeal and fervor so you can serve the Lord.
