Flourishing by Abiding

Read: John 15:1-11

Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. (v. 5)

Do you know someone who walks so closely with God that simply being around them changes you for the better? My grandmother was just such a person who overflowed with the presence of the Holy Spirit. As a child, I thought that her spiritual zeal was simply part of her personality. As an adult, however, I learned her secret: several hours spent in prayer each morning, communing with God and abiding in God’s love.

When we spend time with Jesus, we are changed by him. This is what Jesus intends through his simple invitation, “Abide in me” (v. 4). Spending time with Jesus is not merely beneficial; it is vital to cultivating our souls and bearing spiritual fruit that brings the kingdom of heaven a little closer to earth. We cannot flourish for Jesus if we do not dwell with Jesus in intimate nearness each day. Apart from Jesus—the vine—we, the branches, will shrivel up and die.

It’s important to remember that staying close to Jesus is not merely a spiritual precaution to keep us from becoming dry and fruitless. Instead, abiding is our very lifeline. Abiding in the true Vine is what tethers us to the love of God—the bedrock of all existence. If we want to be people who flourish within the love of God, bearing fruit that glorifies God, then we must learn to make our home in Christ—the source of all life.

As you pray, ask for the grace you need to abide in the true Vine.
