Read: Matthew 27:50-54
The curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. (v. 51)
The veil was a thick curtain that separated two rooms inside the tabernacle, and later the temple in Jerusalem: the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place. The veil served as a sign that the people couldn’t enter into the presence of God.
This indicated at least two things. First, the sin that entered the world through Adam had caused a great separation between God and people. Second, God’s people (the Israelites) needed to understand that only God could fix this great problem. But even though God took steps toward restoration with his people through the tabernacle, we still see that there was a veil that prevented them from entering the Most Holy Place. This means that the way to God wasn’t yet open.
The good news of the gospel is that the veil was removed. This veil had been there since the time of Moses, but now that Christ paid the penalty for our sins, “the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom” (v. 51). Yet, to those who don’t believe, the veil remains (2 Cor. 3:13-18). It’s wonderful that God has removed the veil and shows us that the way to him is open.
Since God invites us to enter into his presence, what will you do? Friends, enter now by calling on the name of Jesus Christ, before it is too late.
As you pray, reflect today on what it means to you that the veil is torn.
