Read: Matthew 7:7-14
How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (v. 11)
Some people are natural gift givers. They are skilled at thinking of what others want or need and cherish the moment when their loved ones unwrap and discover that perfectly chosen treasure. While the world says happiness comes from getting, buying, and accumulating, we as Christians know the real joy that comes from generosity: giving of talents, treasures, time, and more. This design is beautifully written upon our hearts by our Creator, the one whom we’re modeled after.
In today’s reading Jesus invites us to ask our Father for what we need and trust that in his love for us, he will provide (v. 11). This generosity comes in response to our obedience in seeking him and his kingdom. Jesus also reminds us that we respond in obedience to God’s generosity by loving others well. “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” (v. 12) He says that this command, to treat others the way you want to be treated, is a summary of all of God’s law! How powerful is that?
Our heavenly Father loves to give good gifts to his children. When we practice obedience, we experience the joy of God’s provision in our life. How much more will we enjoy our relationship with our Father when we learn to abide in his kindness, omnipotence, and blessings?
As you pray, reflect on these truths and ask God where you might be resisting the joy he created you for.
