Obedience and Trust

Read: 1 Kings 8:54-61

Not one word has failed of all his good promise, which he spoke by Moses his servant. (v. 56)

When things in life don’t go our way, it’s easy to blame God. We wonder what has become of his promises. God often gets the blame when nothing else can. We want to point the finger when the bank account is empty or when the diagnosis is dire. It’s easy to carry over a critical nature to our Father in heaven when we wonder where he is and how he’s working in our world.

In today’s Bible reading, Solomon is with the Israelites and praying a blessing to the Lord, after seven years of building the first temple in Jerusalem. He is reflecting and remarking that in all this time, God worked to fulfill every promise he had made to Moses (v. 56). Think about this: Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt nearly 500 years before Solomon began building this temple (1 Kings 6:1). How powerful and sustaining is the Lord’s voice! God provided for Israel, but it would not have happened without the obedience of Solomon and his ancestors. In the midst of their own struggles over the centuries, they followed God’s call to obey.

Today is the day to begin your journey of obedience by first trusting in the God whose love endures across generations. Believe in the God who works for redemption, not instant gratification. Listen for his voice and know he is eager to build your trust.

As you pray, reflect on the times in your life where God has provided for you. The first step toward obeying him is turning to him in trust.
