Read: Psalm 19
The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul. (v. 7)
Children often want to do the opposite of what their parents ask. Something in them craves rebellion, to know how far is too far. We know this is our sinful nature, engrained in being human. We do the same thing with God, even as adults. He gives us instructions throughout the Bible about the best ways for us to live our lives. And yet, how often do we rebel? Daily. We believe we know better. Perhaps we try to get God’s attention. Perhaps we try to force his hand to stop us from making a bad choice. Perhaps we want to see if he’ll strike down lightning and fury when we go against his direction.
Psalm 19 declares that not only is God’s law fully and truly complete, his book of instruction also revives us. It turns dry land into green pasture. It endures “forever” and is more precious than “gold” (vv. 9-10). Our heavenly Father desires to ignite our soul, make us wise, fill our hearts with joy, and bring light to our eyes (vv. 7-8).
Life brings immense hardship. And we know God will allow us to make mistakes. But how gloriously he offers to dust us off after and gently guide us back to his pleasing and perfect way. Are you craving the return of joy in your heart or light in your eyes? Through obeying his law, God desires to bring you home to green pasture.
As you pray, ask God to begin unveiling the places in your life where you’ve been rebelling instead of obeying.
