Read: Luke 10:38-42
Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her. (v. 42 NIV)
While we often think of autumn as a season of harvest, it is also one of preparation. Unsure of how harsh the winter would be, for much of human history people have spent autumn preserving food and gathering resources to see them through the winter. For most of us, these preparations aren’t necessary in the same way today—fresh and processed food are delivered through global supply chains, blankets and clothes can be purchased easily, and space heaters (and central heating) exist. While automation has made life easier, it’s also possible the loss of this seasonal rhythm is costing us in ways we don’t always realize.
When Jesus visited the home of two of the New Testament’s well-known female figures, Martha placed the importance of preparation over the opportunity for presence. She carried the burden of service with heightened urgency; the need to prepare for guests was real and natural. Her sister Mary’s choice, to leave the chores alone and sit at the Master’s feet during this special visit, bothered Martha to the point of verbal complaint. It was then that Jesus reminded her of the better choice—preparing our hearts to take in what he has for us. Mary chose what mattered more.
Preparing to hear God by centering our lives on him from season to season will preserve us through the most beautiful and the harshest times of life.
As you pray, ask God to calm the noise in your life so you can focus on him.
