Read: Revelation 22:1-16
I am a fellow servant with you. (v. 9)
The popularity of superhero movies in recent years reveals something about our culture: we tend towards hero worship. We promote an over-the-top celebrity culture by giving our time, money, and attention to those we perceive as extraordinary. Christians are not exempt. We have created our own version by following dazzling pastors and other Christian celebrities over the humble way of Christ.
Our passage today provides an antidote. John had seen and heard many wondrous things, having been invited into the throne room of God as a witness. The magnitude of what he had seen and heard lead John to fall to his knees and worship the angel who showed him these things—but his worship was misplaced. “You must not do that!” the angel said, explaining that he is a fellow servant with John, the prophets, and those who obey the Word of God. “Worship God,” the angel concluded (v. 9).
How often do we portray the same level of humility as the angel? When public success and admiration comes our way, do we have the courage to say, “You must not do that!” and point to God as the origin of all good things? Or do we hoard the glory and praise for ourselves? Throughout the Bible, angels exemplify what it looks like to worship God above all else. Ultimately, it is Christ himself who shows us the way of humility, who became human and humbled himself unto death on a cross—valuing obedience over self-exaltation.
As you pray, ask for courage to walk in humility and serve God only.
