It May Be a Long Haul

Read: Matthew 25:1-10

The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. (v. 3 NIV)

We’re used to hearing that Christ’s return may take us by surprise (Matt. 24:42-44). The main lesson that many teach based on that principle is that he may come back sooner than we expect (vv. 45-51). Less commonly stressed is the balancing theme that his return may be much further in the future than we imagine. Yet that is a key lesson of the parable of the ten bridesmaids (25:1-10). They did not take enough oil with them to keep their lamps lit during evening hours if the bridegroom delayed.

The customs are foreign to many today. Before the wedding ceremony and celebration, the groom finished haggling over the bride’s dowry price with her father, while others waited outside to escort the couple to the subsequent festivities. People have long debated the meaning of the oil, but it probably should not be allegorized. Nor should the shops and shopkeepers where more oil could be bought. These are just lifelike details of the day.

What can be deduced is that salvation is not transferable from one person to another the way sharing oil is. Would-be disciples must also be prepared for the long haul. The life of following Jesus may be more arduous than anticipated. The stakes are high enough—eternal life with Christ versus eternal punishment without him—that we must accept the cost. Are you prepared to stay faithful no matter how long he delays?

As you pray, ask God to enable you to remain a disciple of Jesus regardless of how difficult life becomes.
