Pride

Read: Ezekiel 28:11-19

You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. (v. 15)

When we live in abundance, sometimes we become arrogant and fall into sin. This was the story of Tyre, a wealthy city-state. Ezekiel 28 opens with a recognition of Tyre’s achievement in developing its territory. “You are indeed wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you; by your wisdom and your understanding you have made wealth for yourself, and have gathered gold and silver into your treasuries; by your great wisdom in your trade you have increased your wealth” (vv. 3-5). Unfortunately, this recognition ends with the statement, “and your heart has become proud in your wealth.”

It is this pride of Tyre that Ezekiel condemns. It is not Tyre’s wealth that is at issue, but her sin. “In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned” (v. 16). “By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries” (v. 18). That is why God punished Tyre.

The abundance of wealth does not necessarily mean God’s blessing. In fact, it may be the first sign of God’s wrath. God is not against wealth, but God never likes sin, including cheating for self-enrichment and pride. Many people are indeed rich, but they do not enjoy happiness. As you follow God, remember that following God’s way is not a means to wealth. Instead of wealth or success, Jesus promises life (John 10:10).

As you pray, ask God to keep you away from pride and the desire to enrich yourself.
