Ever Winged Bird

Read: Genesis 1:20-23

And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.” (v. 20 NIV)

On the fifth day of creation, God designed an amazing variety of birds. So many colors, types, and sizes, from the tiniest hummingbird to the magnificent peacock, who all testify to his creative imagination. Sometimes I glance outside and count how many different birds are visiting our feeders. Depending on the season, I see sparrows, mourning doves, cardinals, chickadees, red-winged blackbirds, goldfinches, woodpeckers, juncos, orioles, and hummingbirds. Wild turkeys, geese, and ducks roam around our backyard pond. Sometimes I see hawks and herons and hear owls too.

Likewise, each person God created is uniquely designed. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Ps. 139:13-14 NIV). Or as The Message puts it, “I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking! . . . I worship in adoration—what a creation!” (v. 14)

How humbling to realize that our Creator and Father God designed such splendor, not only in the world, but within each of us. We cannot comprehend his greatness, but we can acknowledge and adore him for his handiwork and delight in knowing that we too are “wonderfully made.” —Denise Vredevoogd

As you pray, express your wonder to God, praising him for the majesty of creation.
