Two-Way Trust

William C. Brownson

Read: 2 Timothy 1:12-14

I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me . . . By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you. (vv. 12, 14)

Here again Paul seeks to hearten Timothy with a personal testimony. The apostle says he has put his trust in Jesus. He is confident that the Lord will “guard” that deposit. He will keep all that we place in his hands “until that day.” Here’s the bedrock truth: God is faithful. He is worthy of our trust. He will never let us down. You can and should trust him with everything. Believe it and do it!

The Lord has also given us something to hold in trust. God gave it first to Paul, and Paul is passing it on to Timothy: “Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me” (v. 13). In other words, “I’ve turned it over to you. Keep it safe. Hold it fast!” How important that this entrusted teaching be handed down faithfully to each new generation of believers.

Paul’s final word on this: “By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you” (v. 14). It’s as though he said, “The gospel message is in your hands now, Timothy, and it is priceless. Never let it go. Keep on sounding it forth. As God enables you, be faithful to your trust!” —Bill Brownson

As you pray, ask God to help you guard what he has entrusted to you.
