Blown Off Course

Read: Psalm 16

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. (v. 11 NIV)

“Come out to the front!” Dad exclaimed as he burst back inside. As soon as Mom and I reached the front lawn, we saw what he was so excited about. To our disbelief, a black hot air balloon had landed in our neighbor’s driveway. It was obvious that the balloon had been blown off course, causing it to land where the pilot didn’t intend.

Sometimes we are tempted to let ourselves be blown off course when it comes to our Christian lives. Often, voices of the world try to entice us to follow the winds of self-gratification and popular opinion. If we follow their advice, instead of finding happiness and contentment, all too often we find ourselves miserable. In this psalm, David gives us a prescription for a good life. He writes that if we follow God’s path of life, he will fill us with joy. In verse 2, David says to the Lord, “Apart from you I have no good thing.”

I imagine that the hot air balloon pilot was quite surprised that the winds had blown him so far off course. We do not have to let our lives be subject to winds of change. Instead, we can hold to the course that the Lord sets out. By following that path, we can rejoice and rest secure in his presence. —Steve Laman

As you pray, ask the Lord to help you stay on his path, the path that leads to happiness and joy.
