Read: Romans 1:1-17
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. (v. 16)
When I took up rollerblading, I spoke to others who enjoyed this pastime. With their help and a little research, I purchased quality rollerblades and safety equipment, and I watched videos to learn the basics. Before we embark on something new—rollerblading, skydiving, entering into the covenant of marriage, or responding to the good news of the gospel—it is important to learn the basics.
The gospel, which is the good news of God’s action to save repentant sinners from sin, is the central message of the Bible. It tells us that Jesus is the way and the truth and the life—our only hope for salvation. For the next two weeks, we will focus on the good news of the gospel as taught in the book of Romans, which some have called the “Roman’s Road.”
The core of the gospel is love and forgiveness. God is a God of grace. Created in his image, we are to be bearers of grace. For that to happen, we must be forgiven, redeemed, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live and love like Jesus. We must not be ashamed of the gospel! Whether you are encountering the gospel for the first time or once again, may the basics of faith in Jesus Christ prepare and encourage you to live out your faith and share it with others. —Steve Petroelje
