Champ or Chump?

Jane Douglass White

READ : Judges 16:17-21

In the world’s eyes, Samson was a champ. His strength terrified the Philistines. He judged Israel for twenty-one years, but couldn’t control his lust. Though dedicated to God, he put himself in danger because of sexual sin. He probably thought, “Nothing’s going to happen to me!” Sound familiar?

We heard a great basketball champ tell how the “magic” turned “tragic” when he contracted the AIDS virus from one of his admitted affairs. Another champ was given a long prison sentence for rape.

The world recommends “safe sex” to avoid AIDS. But God says, “a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife; and they shall become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24, my emphasis). Pre-marital sex and adultery are not God’s way. Is it because He wants to cheat us out of having fun? No! It is because God wants us to be free from the pain that promiscuity brings. He wants us to save ourselves for the joy we’ll find in marriage.

We may be a champion in the world’s eyes, but we are a chump if we fail to meet God’s standards. It’s our choice to follow Jesus or the world. Jesus said we couldn’t serve both. Which will you choose?

Father, thank You for sending Jesus to be our standard by which we can judge our choices. In His name. Amen.
