The Crucified and Risen Christ

Claudia Elzinga

READ : Luke 23-24

Jesus was crucified between two criminals. One joined the mocking crowd; the other had the amazing faith to see in this dying man one who would be king. The result was that Jesus promised him they would be together in Paradise that very day.

Luke also records for us the dying words of Jesus, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” (23:46 ESV). Unless Christ returns first, each of us will die. Because of our trust in Christ, we can die with peace in our hearts, knowing we are going to be with the Lord.

On Easter afternoon, two people had a great experience. Out for a walk, they were joined by a stranger. They were discussing the crucifixion and the report of the women that the tomb was empty. Jesus showed them what the Old Testament said about the Christ. They did not know who he was until he broke bread. Later that day, Jesus appeared to his disciples and even ate fish as evidence that his was a physical resurrection. Later, they saw him ascend into heaven.

We have historical accounts written on the basis of the testimony of eyewitnesses. Jesus who was crucified is alive! Believe this and you too will live forever. Our faith is based on fact! Later, Luke will give us another volume, which tells us what happened next, how Jesus established his church. Be a part of it.

Father, we praise you for preserving these records upon which we can base our faith. In Jesus' name. Amen.
